Nerves Incorporated was founded in 2013 with the purpose of continuing the successful collaboration between Dr. Edward W. Keefer, PhD a neurobiologist electrophysiologist and Dr. Jonathan Cheng, MD a plastic and hand surgeon. Uniting their research and clinical experience, they have been collaborating for the past 5 years in research funded by DARPA and NIH.

Our expertise - Our group has significant research expertise and technological capability at the intersection of chronic electrical interfacing of the peripheral nerve and the biology of peripheral nerve regeneration and repair. We aim to combine these areas of expertise in order to provide selective electrical interfacing of autonomic nerves (to provide neuromodulation of systemic conditions such as diabetes, hypertension, and autoimmune disorders), peripheral nerves (to monitor neuroinflammatory and neurodegenerative disease states), sensory nerves (to modulate pain in response to nerve injury and diabetic neuropathy), and spinal cord (to provide motor control signals and sensory feedback). Our technologies are amenable to chronic interfacing of peripheral nerves of small scale and plexus organization for neural stimulation and recording, with low morbidity, low tissue reactivity, and high stability over time. The use of decellularized nerve grafts and directed axon growth provides the ability to interface intact nerves with minimal tissue disruption.
